I'm sorry I was unable to attend but I wanted to share with everyone some of the great things I learned from my mother. She had a lot of special traits and I was lucky enough to learn three skills that have been a big part of my life.
First is a real love of learning and a curiousity for information, even random information. She was always learning about the bible, or atlantis or the evolution of man, and she found these fascinating. I do as well, and I find it really rewarding to learn for knowledge sake, or to entertain an idea that might be outside the mainstream. I think it was because she was a very imaginative person, for instance she read us oz stories as children which I love to this day. That imagination and readiness to investigate a topic were a large part of my history degree. It has a practical element as well. I have found that no matter what the topic, I generally know something about it to carry on a conversation.
Secondly, I learned a very practical as well as rewarding skill with being diplomatic. My mom could find a way to agree with anyone. While that can have some drawbacks, it's often extremely useful to be able to find common ground with others. Now more than ever, many people could use that ability. I certainly use it in my work, even if I don't agree with everything a person is saying, I can usually see part of it.
Finally, my mom was very good about showing kindness to others, especially those down on their luck or animals. I really enjoy that as well, it makes me happy to others, and animals have always given me a lot of joy. That is not only great for the ones I am helping, I feel I get a lot back out of it. It feels very rewarding to be kind.
I was very lucky to get these traits from my mom. They have brought a lot to my life but I have also used them to help others and thus, many people have benefitted from her as well.
