On April 13,2024 at the age of 94, Bob Owen passed away peacefully ending his service to God and others. He leaves behind a legacy of gospel preaching of 8 decades along with 40 years of teaching and working with young people.
Bob was born in Memphis, Tennessee to the loving Christian family of Scott and Nell Owen. In 1949, Bob met the love of his life Janelle Boswell. In 1952 they married and moved to Temple Terrace, Florida where Bob began a lifetime commitment of service to God by teaching at Florida College and preaching the gospel.
His work at Florida College began by teaching Speech and Bible classes. Continuing to teach, he at times was Dean of Students, Business Administrator, Assistant to the President and finally President. Also, during these years, he was the local evangelist for the Hercules Church of Christ in Clearwater, then the Habana Avenue Church of Christ in Tampa and finally the Largo Church of Christ in Largo. He later served as an elder with the University Church of Christ in Tampa. At age 60, and for the next 20 years with the support of others he began going every year to Ethiopia to help spread the gospel. His influence, along with the work of many, continues to provide development for preachers in over 300 congregations every year.
During his 70 years in Temple Terrace Bob was very active in the community. He was elected as a City Councilman and served for many terms. He was in the Civitan Club for several years and then a lifetime member of the North Tampa Rotary Club. As an avid golfer, he was proud to live in a community with such a golf history.
