Milagros Escobar Ortiz's Obituary
Milagros Escobar Ortiz died unexpectedly in the hospital on July 20, 2024, in Plant City, FL at the age of 77.
Milagros is survived by her children; Son Pedro Fuentes and his wife Zugelis Garcia (Howell, NJ), Daughter Marisol Chontos and her husband Dean S. Chontos (Newport News, VA), Daughter Monica Fernandez (Plant City, FL) and Son Jesus Marquez (Brandon, FL) as well as her eleven grandchildren; Christian Garcia, Kiara Fuentes, Ashley Fuentes, Jaileen Robinson, Rafael Chontos, Danielle Chontos, Iyana Marquez, Elisa Fuentes, Jason Marquez, Kayla Marquez and Harrison Marquez. She is also survived by her four great-grandchildren, Mason Fuentes, Janessa Garcia, Elijah Robinson and Makari Alston. Milagros is survived by her sister Carmen Escobar Ortiz and is predeceased by her father Rafael Escobar Canal (Carolina, Puerto Rico), her Mother Reyes Matilde Ortiz Andino (San Juan, Puerto Rico), her sister Francisca Escobar Ortiz, and brothers Perfecto Escobar Ortiz and Rafael Escobar Ortiz.
Milagros Escobar was born on May 15, 1947, in Santurce, Puerto Rico to Rafael Escobar and Reyes Matilde Ortiz Andino. She graduated from Kingsborough Community College, Brooklyn, NY in 1975 with a degree in Liberal Arts. She began working for New York City Housing Authority as a Supervisor, in the New City Housing Division and remained there until retiring in 2002.
Milagros is remembered by her children as a very strong, loving, stubborn, and fiercely independent mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals and be successful. She is also remembered as a loving grandmother who never missed a family member’s graduation, and always remembered sending them Christmas presents. Abuela Milagros, as she was affectionately known by her grandchildren, also enjoyed taking family vacations which included cruises and trips to Puerto Rico. She was extremely proud of her grandchildren’s diverse careers. Her family was very important to her, and her pride in them showed in the many pictures that covered the walls of her home.
Milagros loved to travel, often taking pictures of her adventures. She was a generous and dedicated person who loved plants and was passionate about gardening. She was an active and dedicated member of the Corpus Christi Catholic Church for 10 years and often volunteered at the University Community Hospital. She enjoyed going to the movies and watching sports like basketball and attended many of her grandchildren’s soccer games. She often shared positive, inspiring messages on social media about embracing every day and being grateful. She will indeed be missed.
A viewing service will be held on Friday, July 26, 2024, from 11:00am to 1:00pm at Sunset Funeral Home and Memory Gardens, 10005 N. US. Highway 301 Thonotosassa, Fl 33592. Father Alfred, Pastor will officiate a ceremony at 1:00pm. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Milagros’ life.
