Michael Lee Drake's Obituary
Michael Lee Drake, 71, of Brandon, passed away September 18, 2023. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who are heartbroken by this loss.
Michael was passionate about many things. Everything he did he went all in. He loved to travel, always ready to get in the car and hit the road to see new things and places, taking in all the sights and never really getting enough of the journey. In fact, he dreamed of one day taking his granddaughter on the tour of her lifetime with the grandpa who completely adored her. He loved to go out on the water in his boat, or even better, on cruises with his beloved wife. He was also happy to stay on land; woodworking, creating and repairing things; and gardening. Michael loved to garden. In fact, he was so passionate about it, he became head of Future Farmers of America at Turkey Creek Middle School- having earned his master’s degree in agriculture from University of Florida. He inspired many others’ enthusiasm about agriculture, and his love of the outdoors.
Michael was also a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, serving from 1972 to 1976 at Tyndall Air Force base in Panama City, Florida.
Michael was a committed educator, a devout friend, and quite simply, a happy man who truly enjoyed his life. More than anything else, Michael deeply adored his family; in particular, his cherished granddaughter, Sadie, who lit up his heart.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Margaret Drake.
He is survived by his beloved family; Linda, the love of his life, whom he married October 14, 1972; his daughter, Melinda (Derek) Hovey; grandchildren, Joseph and Sadie Hovey; 2 sisters, Debbie (Dave) Scott, and Anita Collins; several nieces and nephews; and very many friends who will continue to miss and love him forever.
There will be a graveside service with well-deserved military honors on Saturday, September 23, 3pm, at Sunset Memory Gardens, 11005 N US Hwy 301, Thonotosassa, FL 33592, which will be officiated by his beloved brother-in-law, Dave Scott.
