Mary Elizabeth Sterling's Obituary
Lieutenant, USN (Ret) Mary Elizabeth Sterling, passed away peacefully at Lifepath Hospice, Ruskin, Hillsborough County, FL., on May 21st, 2023. She was the daughter of Roger Sterling and Loretta (Cowen) Sterling. Mary was born on October 12th, 1946, in Elmont, NY., and moved shortly thereafter to Tampa, FL. She graduated from Our Lady of Perpetual Hope High School in 1964 and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1967. She was a Viet Nam era veteran and served as an electronics technician, obtaining many commendations and awards for academic achievement, physical fitness and outstanding marksmanship. She had a temporary break in service to attend the University of South Florida where she earned a Baccalaureate Degree in Advanced Mathematics and Statistics in 1977. She resumed her naval career, earned a Master’s Degree and received a commission to Ensign in 1980. She held various staff positions and taught advanced mathematics at the United States Naval Preparatory School, Newport, RI. Mary retired from active Federal Military Service in July 1991. After retirement she worked several years for the Walmart Corporation. She was a dedicated long-term parishioner of Saint Stephen Catholic Church and led a life of distinction and honor, with service to her country, community and family. She is survived by a half-brother, David “Bernie” Lane, and wife Darlene of Meigs, GA. A funeral mass is scheduled for June 23rd, 2023, 11:00 AM, at Saint Stephen Catholic Church Chapel, Riverview, FL., followed by graveside interment at Sunset Memory Gardens, 11005 US-Hwy 301, Thonotosassa, FL 33594.
