Obituary: Kuriakose Karukapily (1946 - 2024)
Kuriakose Karukapily, of Gibsonton, FL, age 77, peacefully passed away on the morning of June 4th, 2024, at 3 AM, surrounded by his loved ones after receiving his christian rites.
Kuriakose, was born in Vilangu, Kizhakkambalam, as eldest child of the Late Korath Ulahannan Karukappilly and Sosa Karukappilly. Growing up in and around Kizhakkambalam, he attended Junior Technical School at Koovapadi, Perumbavoor. Known fondly as Satyan Kuriakose, he was renowned for his integrity, looks, charm, and friendly demeanor. He enjoyed Volleyball and was very active in the sports circles. He also lead the Kizhakkambalam Youth Congress activities during his teenage years and early 20s. He was a trusted associate of M.C Jacob, the founder of Anna Aluminum Company and Kitex, from early inception days of these enterprises. After serving a few years at Anna Aluminum, he ventured into independent government contracting as a Kerala PWD licensed contractor in the late 70s till the early 80’s.
He emigrated to the United States in 1980, worked in various roles at Stuart Stamping Company, before joining New York City Transit Authority as a Car Inspector, with a long tenure, retiring in 2009. A Serial Entrepreneur at heart, he first ventured in partnership with family members and started Oriental Gifts and Spices in Spring Valley, NY, . He started his solo business venture Mayur Distributors in 1992, engaged in import and distribution of goods all over the United States and Canada from Columbia, Taiwan, and India till 2007. Post retirement, he moved to the Greater Tampa area in 2015 An active life time member of MAT, and MACF, he was a member of Yonkers Malayali association, Hudson valley Malayali association and FOKANA. World leaders, clergy, and entrepreneurs enjoyed his warmth and hospitality at his homes in the Bronx, Colonial heights in Westchester and here Tampa, FL, and made it their home in America while they were visiting. His kind heart bled for helping the needy, as such he participated in many charities in the United States and Kerala. He was always the first to help out in preparations at any community event. He had a proverbial green thumb, his gardens winning Kerala Organic gardener of 2017 and Karshaka-shree of 2018. He was active, tending to his garden, even on the eve of his passing. He enjoyed music, poetry, and was an avid subscriber of National geographic books and shows. His best days were spent reciting poems or singing songs with family and community. He was eager even the last few weeks of his life, preparing for an amazing birthday celebration for his wife.
He is survived by his beloved spouse of 52 years, Susan Karukappilly, and his loving children, Shibi, Bobby, Paul, and Sanjana. He will also be remembered fondly by his grandchildren, Ashwin, Noble, Athena, Riya, Jiana, and Ava. He leaves behind cherished memories for his siblings, Mary Mathew, Varghese Olahannan, Paul Karukappallil, Alias Olahannan, Annie Sunny, and Valsa George and their families. He always showered family members, friends and his communities with affection, warmth, and love. His legacy of unconditional love and loyalty to everyone, the most cherished trait of Kuriakose.
A wake to honor Kuriakose's life will be held on 7th June 2024, at 5.30 pm, at Mar Gregorios Syrian Orthodox Church, ocated at 12001 N. 58th St, Tampa, FL 33617. Funeral rites will commence at 10.00 AM on June 8th, 2024, Saturday, at the aforementioned church, followed by internment at 11.00 AM, at Sunset Memorial Gardens 11005 US-301, Thonotosassa, FL 33592
