Jean was born November 28,1938 and raised in Turtle Creek Pennsylvania, where she graduated from Turtle Creek High School in 1956. Her friends all commented in her yearbook that she would be a wonderful nurse. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from West Penn Hospital’s School of Nursing in 1959. She married Robert Thomas Berringer, from Swissvale PA, and worked as a nurse in a pediatric ward until giving birth to their first child. Then concentrated on raising their 4 children and did not return to nursing until all 4 of their children were in school. The family was living in Gulf Breeze Florida at the time. The family moved to Land O’Lakes Florida in 1976, and she got a nursing job at University Community Hospital in Tampa. In 1980, she returned to school and got her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of South Florida and became a Certified Diabetes Educator. She worked at University Community Hospital in Tampa, Florida, for 31 years, serving as a Nurse, Diabetes Educator, and Assistant Head Nurse/Assistant Clinical Manager. She retired in 2007 at age 69.
Jean is survived by her 4 children: Ann Berringer, Ken Berringer, Donna Kerbo, and Debra Webb, as well as 7 grandchildren: Zachary Kerbo, Jennifer Berringer, Noah Kerbo, Elizabeth Webb, Jessica Berringer, and Sam and Jason Kerbo, and 2 great-grandchildren: Daniel Kerbo and Ezekiel Kerbo, a sister; Eileen Chamberlain, and a brother; James Tweedy. She was also survived by her best friend of 50 years, Dorothy “Dottie” Johnson, another nurse who she worked with at UCH. She was preceded in death by her mother; Anna Mae Palmer Tweedy, and her father; Clarence “Jim” Tweedy.
Jean loved her family and was the matriarch and bedrock of her extended family, she was protective and generous and always giving. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of her life, and she was always happy to listen to them, be entertained by them, and talk proudly about them to anyone who would listen!
Jean was an avid soap opera fan, faithful to the Young and the Restless and the Bold and the Beautiful from the first day they aired. She also loved to read Romance Novels and Mystery books. She had a collection of Romance novels that rivaled many libraries!
Jean liked to help others. She often gave to Saint Jude’s Hospital for Children, and there was an Indian School that she gave to as well. She made many sacrifices to help her children and grandchildren, wanting to help anytime there was a need, and always willing to give a hug when needed.
In her retirement, she enjoyed her grandchildren, her Soap Operas, her Books, seeing the ducks in the backyard and the lake, going out to eat with her family, and getting together with the extended family for holidays.
